The Offshore Islet Restoration Committee (OIRC), formed in September 2002, is a multi-agency group dedicated to conducting biological surveys and restoration on selected offshore islets in Hawaii. OIRC members include the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry and Wildlife and Division of Aquatic Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Pacific Islands Office, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Geological Survey’s Biological Resources Division, U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services and Natural Resources Conservation Service, National Park Service, Nature Conservancy of Hawaii, Bishop Museum, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries, Pelea Pacifica, two Oahu kayak rental and ecotourism companies, and the University of Hawaii.

The websites of OIRC members are included in the ‘Links’ section of this website.

The objectives of the OIRC are to:

• Conduct baseline biological inventories on selected islets and create a species database

• Collect and conserve genetic material from rare plant species

• Eradicate alien mammals from islets

• Assess efficacy of experimental eradication techniques

• Eradicate or control invasive weeds

• Control soil erosion through re-vegetation

• Re-plant native vegetation, including rare species, on selected islets

• Monitor and scientifically document results of restoration actions

• Educate the public on islet biota and conservation needs
