INTRODUCTION TO THE HAWAII [THE BIG ISLAND] ISLETS
Hawaii Island, commonly known as the Big Island, has three offshore islets of significant size; Paoakalani, Mokupuku, and Paalaea. These islets are black basalt sea stacks clustered close together, 300 to 500 feet off the Kohala coast’s Honokea Valley. A fourth islet, Keaoi, which largely disappeared following an earthquake in 1975, is located on the Kau coast near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. All of these islets are state land and all except Paalaea are managed by the Hawaii Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) as State Seabird Sanctuaries.
