INTRODUCTION TO THE LANAI ISLETS
Lanai has five offshore islets of significant size; Puupehe, Poopoo, Mokunaio, Kiei, and Nanahoa. They are all seastacks, lying fairly close to shore along Lanai’s west and south coasts. All the islets are state land and all but Kiei are managed by the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) as State Seabird Sanctuaries. A comparison of botanical surveys conducted in 2006 and 1982 indicates that the percentage of alien versus native plant species is increasing.
