Physical Features
Mokupipi is a small (0.9 acres) flat, 40 foot tall sea stack with a few surrounding tide pools. The islet is relatively close to shore and lies off of Nahiku.
Regulations
Mokupipi is state property. State and/or federal law protects all native wildlife and plants.
Birds
An April 2005 survey noted about a dozen Wedge-tailed shearwater pairs were observed resting in their burrows and among the naupaka. Several Black noddies were observed flying around the islet.
Plants
An April 2005 survey recorded 11 plant species; 7 native and 4 introduced. The islet is covered mostly with naupaka on the taller outcrop with a mix of Button sedge (Fimbristylis cymosa) and Akulikuli on the lower portion. The 2005 survey also recorded the presence of the endangered grass, Ischaemum byrone.
Insects
Limited insect collections were made in April 2005. Although all species identifications are not yet available, invasive crazy ants (Paratrechina longicornis) are present.
Marine Organisms
No marine survey data is known.
Human Uses
No human uses are known.
Threats
Weedy plant species such as Chinese banyan (Ficus microcarpa) and alien grass species can compete with native species for space and nutrients. Invasive ants are also a potential threat to native plants, insects, and seabird chicks.
