INTRODUCTION TO THE MOLOKAI ISLETS
Molokai has several offshore islets of varying sizes. Only the seven largest and most biologically significant islets are included here; Okala, Mokapu, Huelo, Pauonuakea, Mokumanu, Mokuhooniki, and Kanaha. The first five islets are strung along the north Molokai sea cliffs, east of Kalaupapa Peninsula, and the last two are located close together off the east end of Molokai. All seven islets are owned by the state and all but Pauonuakea are managed by the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) as State Seabird Sanctuaries. Okala and Huelo are within the boundaries of the Kalaupapa National Historical Park and are co-managed with the National Park Service. The north shore of Molokai, including its offshore islets, harbors some of the most diverse and intact coastal plant communities left in Hawaii.
