ISLETS: MOLOKAI > MOKUMANU

Mokumanu

Physical Features
Mokumanu is a small seastack located about 4 miles east of Kalaupapa Peninsula between Haupu and Pelekunu Bays. It is between 2 and 3 acres in size and about 150 feet high. The name translates as ‘bird island’.

Regulations
The islet is a State Seabird Sanctuary managed by the Hawaii DOFAW. Regulations in Hawaii Administrative Rules, Title 13 Chapter 125, protect wildlife and plants and restrict human activities in seabird sanctuaries. Federal law also protects seabirds, shorebirds, and threatened or endangered species.

Birds
White-tailed tropicbirds (Phaethon lepturus) and Black noddies (Anous minutus) were observed nesting in the 1980s.

Plants
The only known plant survey was conducted by kayak in August 1984, so the plant list is incomplete. Three native species were identified from a distance, with Scaevola taccada (Naupaka) being the most common.

Insects
Insect survey data is unkown.

Marine Organisms
Marine survey data is unknown.

Human Uses
Human uses are unkown.

Threats
