Physical Features
Pauonuakea is a small seastack located about 3.5 miles east of Kalaupapa Peninsula in Haupu Bay. The islet is less than an acre in size and about 50 feet high. The name can be translated to mean ‘skirt of Nuakea.’ Nuakea, the daughter of the chief of Haupu, was a local aumakua.

Bird survey data is unknown.
Plants
The only known plant survey was conducted by kayak in August 1984, so the plant list is incomplete. Four native species were identified from a distance, with Naupaka (Scaevola taccada) being the most common.
