INTRODUCTION TO THE NIIHAU ISLETS
Kaula and Lehua, two of the largest and most biologically important of Hawaii’s offshore islets, are located near Niihau, within Kauai County. Both islets were transferred to the federal government by the Territory of Hawaii in the early 1900s. Kaula is currently administered by the Navy and Lehua by the U.S. Coast Guard. However, both are also designated by the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources as State Seabird Sanctuaries. The State of Hawaii has historically contested federal claims of ownership of Kaula.
